What are Varifocal Glasses?

Varifocal glasses offer multiple focal points in one lens, providing clear vision at all distances, near, intermediate, and far, through a single, sophisticated lens. Unlike bifocals, which have two distinct sections, varifocal lenses offer a smooth, gradual shift in lens power from top to bottom. This seamless progression means you can drive, read, or use a computer without needing to switch glasses.

Varifocal Alpha Lens

The upper part of the lens supports long-distance vision, ideal for activities like driving. The middle portion caters to intermediate tasks like viewing a computer screen or chatting with someone at arm’s length. The lower section is designed for close-up activities like reading or scrolling on your phone.

This advanced design allows for a more natural visual experience by incorporating multiple focal points, offering more flexibility than traditional bifocals. In short, varifocal glasses adapt to your everyday needs, so your vision stays sharp, whatever you're doing.

How Varifocal Lenses Work

Varifocal lenses feature a seamless gradient of optical power, transitioning smoothly from distance vision at the top to near vision at the bottom. This is achieved through a progressive corridor that replaces the sharp divisions seen in bifocals.

The design allows for clear vision at all distances, without image jump or visible lens lines. Advanced freeform technology often customises this gradient based on your prescription and visual habits, offering a natural, uninterrupted visual experience tailored to modern lifestyles.

What Are The Advantages of Varifocal Lenses?

Varfocal lenses offer a huge number of benefits to the wearer, including outstanding vision quality with maximim practicality.

Natural Vision

Varifocal lenses offer a more natural vision experience by providing a smooth and seamless transition between different prescriptions, allowing the wearer to see clearly at all distances without the abrupt shift of focus that can occur with traditional bifocal lenses.

No Need to Switch Glasses

With varifocal lenses, you can wear a single pair of glasses for all your daily activities, eliminating the need to constantly switch between multiple pairs of glasses for different tasks.

Aesthetically Appealing

Unlike bifocal lenses, which have a visible line separating the different prescriptions, varifocal lenses provide a more aesthetically appealing appearance, making them a popular choice among individuals who want to maintain a more youthful look.

Better Peripheral Vision

Varifocal lenses provide better peripheral vision compared to bifocal lenses, as they do not have a visible line that can obstruct the wearer's field of view.

Customised Prescription

Varifocal lenses can be customised to the wearer's unique vision needs, ensuring optimal clarity and comfort.

How to get used to Varifocals

If you have previously worn varifocals, you may be familiar with a particular design. It's important to note that each design may vary slightly, and there may be an adjustment period when transitioning to new varifocal glasses. We recommend wearing your new lenses for the first time in the morning, as your eyes are fresher and more adaptable to the change.

As with any new pair of glasses, it takes time for your eyes to fully adapt to varifocal lenses. To ensure your complete satisfaction, we offer a 30-day guarantee on all varifocal glasses. This allows you ample time to adjust and evaluate their performance.

We recommend wearing your new varifocal glasses continuously for at least seven days to give yourself the best opportunity to adapt and experience the full benefits they offer.

Varifocal Glasses FAQs

How much are varifocal glasses?

We offer two varifocal options - Standard Varifocals (£55), these are excellent freeform varifocals which are perfect for most people. And Alpha Premium Varifocals (£85) and offer a 30% improvement in the field of vision compared to the standard options.

How do varifocal glasses work?

Varifocal lenses allow wearers to see clearly at different distances using a single lens. The upper portion is designed for long-distance vision, the middle for intermediate tasks (like computer work or face-to-face conversations), and the lower section for reading or close-up work. These transitions are seamless, with no visible lines on the lens.

What is the difference between bifocal and varifocal glasses?

Bifocal glasses have two distinct areas for near and long-distance vision, separated by a visible line. Varifocals have a gradual progression between distance, intermediate, and near vision zones, offering a smoother transition and a more natural viewing experience.

What are varifocal glasses used for?

Varifocals are designed for people needing multiple vision corrections, such as those with presbyopia. They get rid of the need to switch between different pairs of glasses for tasks like driving, reading, or using a computer.

How do you use varifocal glasses?

Using varifocals involves positioning your gaze to look through the correct lens area. For distance vision, look straight ahead; for intermediate tasks, use the middle portion; and for close-up work, look through the lower section. Adjusting to these zones may take some practice.

How do you get used to varifocal glasses?

The adjustment period varies from a few days to a couple of weeks. Consistent wear is extremely important—avoid switching back to your old glasses. It's recommended to wear them consistently for 7 days to give yourself the best chance of getting used to them and experiencing their full benefits. Also, wear your new lenses for the first time in the morning as your eyes are fresher and more receptive to change in the morning.

Are bigger glasses frames better for varifocals?

Larger frames are often recommended for varifocals as they provide more space to accommodate each vision zone, improving comfort and clarity.

Are varifocals good for driving?

Yes, varifocals are excellent for driving as they allow you to easily switch focus between the road, your dashboard, and mirrors.

Can I make varifocals into sunglasses?

Yes! You can also make any pair of our varifocal glasses into sunglasses. During checkout select a lens tint option, our options include polarised lenses, photochromic lenses, Transitions® lenses, and mirror lenses.
